Diwali sweets that ship well (and how long they keep)
Most Indian sweets do not survive a long journey. Milk-based mithai like barfi, rasgulla and kalakand need refrigeration and last days, not weeks. The sweets that travel are the dry, sugar-set ones made with ghee, gram flour, nuts and jaggery. Soan papdi: the one everyone exchanges
Soan papdi is the most exchanged Diwali sweet in India. Ours is made from gram flour, sugar, ghee, cardamom and pistachio, pulled by hand into flaky layers that melt in the mouth. It is dry, light and packed in a 500 g gift box, which is why it is the Diwali sweet that survives shipping. Buy it up to three months ahead.
Sohan halwa: the Old Delhi speciality
Sohan halwa is nothing like the soft halwa most people know. It is slow-cooked for hours from wheat, ghee and sugar until it sets into dense, chewy discs studded with almonds and pistachio and scented with saffron. It is a heritage speciality of Old Delhi's sweet houses and comes in a 400 g tin.
Chikki: two ingredients, six months
Lonavala, a hill stop between Mumbai and Pune, is famous for chikki sold to every passing traveller. Ours is made of just two ingredients, peanuts and jaggery, with no ghee or flour, and keeps for 6 months. It contains peanuts.
Dry fruit: the gift that isn't a sweet
In Delhi, a box of dry fruit is as standard a Diwali gift as mithai. Our Khari Baoli box holds cashews, raisins, dried figs, green cardamom and saffron in a carved mango-wood box. It is made to order and takes 10 days before it ships, so order it first.
