Indian shawls and stoles: a gift buyer's guide
An Indian shawl or stole is one of the few gifts that is light to ship, fits everyone, and carries a real place of origin. This guide compares the six scarves, shawls and wraps in the Taj Bazaar catalog, from a $58 Chanderi stole that ships from US stock in 1–2 days to a $295 Kashmir pashmina made to order in Srinagar. Every price below includes import duties on retail orders to the US, UK, EU, Canada and Australia.

GI means the craft is registered in India as a Geographical Indication, a name tied to the region it comes from. Five of the six are GI crafts, and each is made in the town named in the table.
Kashmir pashmina: the heirloom
The Kashmir Pashmina Shawl is the original "pashmina". The fibre is combed from Changthangi goats in Ladakh, spun by hand and woven on a wooden loom in Srinagar. Ours is 40 × 80 in, 100% Changthangi pashmina and GI-certified, and weighs about 250 g, so it folds into a small gift box.
"Pashmina" is printed on a great many blends, so check three things before you buy any shawl sold under the name:
- Fibre content on the label. In the US, the Wool Products Labeling Act requires the label to state fibre content accurately, so look for a percentage, not just the word "pashmina".
- Place of making. Kashmir pashmina is a registered GI tied to Kashmir, so the seller should name the town where it was woven. Ours is woven in Srinagar.
- Lead time and price. A hand-spun, hand-woven shawl takes weeks to make. Ours is made to order over 35 days, which is why it is the first gift to order for Christmas.
Care is simple: dry clean, and store it folded with cedar.
Silk stoles for festivals and dressing up
The Banarasi Silk Stole ($89) is woven on jacquard handlooms in Varanasi, with gold zari patterns taken from Mughal designs. It gives brocade richness at accessory size (22 × 72 in), so it works over a plain kurta or a black dress for Diwali parties and weddings. It is made to order in 25 days.
The Chanderi Silk-Cotton Stole ($58) is the opposite: sheer and light, with small gold butis inlaid by hand as the cloth is woven. At 120 g it is the lightest piece here, and because it ships from US stock it is the only stole that can still arrive before Diwali on 8 November. Both silks are dry clean only.
Phulkari: colour for weddings
The Phulkari Dupatta ($79) is a Punjabi wedding tradition. The floral pattern is embroidered from the back of the cloth in long darning stitches of silk floss on a cotton base. At 40 × 90 in it is generous enough to wear as a wrap. We found this craft at the Punjab stalls of Dilli Haat in Delhi; ours is made in Patiala over 25 days.
Kantha: a wrap for the sofa
If the person you're buying for would rather wrap up at home, the Kantha Throw ($89) is five layers of old saris quilted by hand with thousands of running stitches in Bolpur, West Bengal. No two are alike. At 50 × 70 in it covers a lap or a reading chair, and unlike the silks it goes in the washing machine on a gentle cold cycle (air dry). It ships from US stock, which makes it a good Thanksgiving hostess gift too.
The saree: for a once-in-a-decade gift
The Kanjeevaram Silk Saree ($320) is woven in Kanchipuram from mulberry silk with a pure zari border. Its body and border are woven separately and interlocked, the Kanchipuram signature. It is 6.2 m with a blouse piece and takes 40 days to make. Store it wrapped in muslin.
Order-by dates for Christmas
Made-to-order pieces take the making time shown, then 6–9 business days of air freight, and every order is confirmed by email with a payment link before work starts. These dates aim for delivery by 23 December. Treat them as the latest sensible date, not a guarantee.
| Piece | Making time | Order by |
|---|---|---|
| Kanjeevaram Silk Saree | 40 days | 29 October |
| Kashmir Pashmina Shawl | 35 days | 3 November |
| Banarasi Silk Stole, Phulkari Dupatta | 25 days | 13 November |
| Chanderi Stole, Kantha Throw | US stock, 1–2 days | mid-December |
Pair a shawl with a caddy of Kashmiri Kahwa ($18, US stock), the saffron, cardamom and almond green tea of Kashmiri homes. For more ideas, see our Diwali gifts and Diwali gift boxes pages, or browse all gift guides.
